Definition: MySpace
The major social networking site on the Web in the mid-2000s. Founded in 2003 by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe, MySpace was acquired by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation via its purchase of parent company Intermix in 2005. In 2006, MySpace was the most visited site on the Web; however, by 2008, it was overtaken by Facebook and continued to decline.
In June 2011, Specific Media acquired MySpace in order to promote its music and entertainment focus, where musicians and videographers post their music and videos and artists show their paintings. At the time of acquisition, the number of unique visitors had dwindled to an estimated 20% of the number at its height, and the organization was sold for a fraction of the more than half billion dollars paid by News Corporation. See social networking site and Facebook.
