Definition: PaaS
(1) (hardware Platform As A Service) Synonymous with "infrastructure as a service" (IaaS), which provides a general purpose hardware environment. See cloud computing and IaaS.
(2) (development Platform As A Service) A cloud computing service that comes with a broad set of development tools for creating and deploying applications. In this context, it is more comprehensive than many "infrastructure as a service" (IaaS) offerings, which provide only the servers, operating systems and related software to make them function properly. See cloud computing.
(3) (software Platform As A Service) A cloud computing software platform that provides a complete information system online such as a customer relationship management (CRM) system. In this context, it is a self-contained software platform for a specific business purpose and may be considered "software as a service" (SaaS). See cloud computing and SaaS.
