Definition: port
(1) See TCP/IP port and port 80.
(2) (verb) To convert software to run in a different computer environment. For example, the phrase "to port the application to Unix," means making the necessary changes in the program to enable it to run under Unix.
(3) (verb) To switch a telephone number from one carrier to another. See LNP.
(4) (noun) A socket on a computer or on a network device such as a switch or router. For example, WAN ports and LAN ports are Ethernet sockets. A USB port is a socket for plugging in flash-based USB drives or a USB cable connected to a peripheral device. Serial and parallel ports are earlier sockets for connecting mice and printers. Ports on an Earlier PC
On modern PCs, the mouse, keyboard, serial, parallel and game ports have all been replaced by several USB ports on the back and front of the computer case. See PC input/output.
