Definition: radio
(1) A device that either receives, transmits or transmits and receives wireless signals (electromagnetic waves). The term may refer to a stand-alone unit or only to the circuits that handle the transmission. The phrase "the device has four radios" means the unit has four transceivers. For example, a modern smartphone can have four radios; one each for 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. See transceiver.
(2) The transmission of wireless signals (electromagnetic waves) through the air or through a hollow tube called a "waveguide." Although radio is often thought of as only AM and FM radio or sometimes two-way radio, all transmission systems that propagate signals over the air are "radio," including TV, satellite, portable phones, cellphones and wireless LANs. See spectrum.
Electromagnetic Spectrum
The radio portion of the entire spectrum of radiation is from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. This huge band of frequencies has been defined by the FCC in the U.S. and governmental bodies in other countries.
For the Early Adopter!
In 1925, you had to be dedicated to listen to the radio. Users had to tune three stages on this battery-operated Stewart Warner Model 325 to get a good signal, and once you got it, you wrote down the numbers on a log sheet (top) so you could tune in quickly the next time.
