Definition: StarOffice
A Java-based office suite from Sun that runs under Solaris, Windows and Linux. StarOffice reads and writes Microsoft Office and many other file formats and includes a word processor, HTML editor, spreadsheet, database program, paint program, drawing program, presentation program, business graphics, event planner, equation builder, e-mail client, newsreader and Web browser.
All applications are launched from the StarOffice Workplace desktop environment, which includes an Explorer window for viewing files and folders and StarOffice resources. StarOffice comes with its own Java runtime module for machines that do not have a Java interpreter. Originally a free service, StarOffice moved to a revenue-based model.
