Definition: streaming
(1) Transmitting digital audio or video to the user from a private network or the public Internet, the latter having become the streaming capital of the world. To the user, streaming is like listening to radio or watching cable TV, except that a wired or wireless network connection is used. Normally, unlike downloading, the content is later deleted from the computer by the operating system. However, there are apps that can save streamed content. In addition, set-top boxes may allow streamed content to be stored like a DVR.
Streaming Vs. Downloading
Streaming means storing files temporarily while the user plays the music and watches the movie. Downloading means storing files for use at any time in the future. See streaming audio, streaming video and home theater streaming.
(2) Transferring or transmitting data. For example, the phrase "the device was streaming data" is another way of saying that data were being transferred or transmitted with no reference to the more widely heard usage of the term in definition #1 above. See stream.
