Definition: TOSLINK
(TOShibaLINK) An optical interface for digital audio connections that provides a data rate from 125 Mbps to 1.2 Gbps. Developed by Toshiba and part of the S/PDIF interface, TOSLINK sockets are widely found on A/V receivers, set-top boxes, CD/DVD players and TVs. See S/PDIF and HDMI switch.
Digital Audio Connections
The TOSLINK socket is commonly found next to an RCA socket for digital audio connections on A/V equipment. Both are part of the S/PDIF interface. TOSLINK provides the optical option using a fiber cable, and RCA provides the electrical equivalent over coax. If TOSLINK is not used, the stopper plug (bottom right) prevents the red LED light beam from transmitting outside the box.
Optical Audio
\"Optical\" or \"Optical Audio\" are typical designations for TOSLINK on A/V equipment. Analog stereo is also provided on this set-top box from Roku, which streams Netflix, Hulu Plus and Amazon Video content. Both analog and digital connections are commonly found on A/V equipment to support both old and new devices.
