Definition: VAIO
(Video Audio Integrated Operation) Sony's trade name for its desktop and laptop PCs. In mid-1998, Sony introduced its 505G series of subnotebooks that were the first in ultra-thin Pentium portables. Numerous models from Sony and similar models from other companies soon followed.
Sony VAIO 505G
At three pounds and less than an inch thick, the 505G set a trend in 1998 for ultra-light notebook computers. In models such as these, floppy and CD-ROM drives were outboard to reduce weight, and a docking station was often included. (Image courtesy of Sony Corporation.)
