(Western Digital Corporation, Lake Forest, CA, www.wdc.com) Founded originally as a specialty semiconductor company under the name General Digital in 1970, its name was changed to Western Digital in 1971. In 1976, it introduced the first floppy disk controller, and later, hard disk controllers. In the late 1980s, it introduced a line of display adapters for the PC and also entered the disk drive business. Western Digital's line of award-winning Caviar drives, introduced in 1990, have been widely used in PCs.
