Definition: Windows 8
The next client version of Windows, which runs on PCs and tablets. Expected in 2012, it offers unique desktop-tablet integration, featuring full Microsoft Office functionality on the tablets. Laptops that convert to tablets (see convertible tablet PC), as well as laptops with removable screens that become tablets, are expected to take advantage of this.
Two Interfaces: Desktop and Metro
Windows 8 features a traditional desktop interface with overlapping windows similar to Windows 7; however, there are major style changes in Start menu, taskbars and navigation. Also provided is a dramatically new user interface (UI) called Metro. Resembling the Windows Phone interface, the "tile-based" Metro features full-screen apps for touch-screen tablets, and users can easily switch back and forth between Metro and Desktop.
In the Windows 8 Developer's Preview, released September 2011, a tedious edit in the Registry enabled the user to revert entirely to the Windows 7 Start menu. However, in the February 2012 Consumer Preview, that option was no longer evident.
Two Platforms: x86 and ARM
Both Metro and Desktop interfaces run on x86-based personal computers, and Metro apps from the Windows Store can run on both x86 desktops and ARM-based tablets. However, only Metro apps run on ARM tablets with some exceptions: the tablets come with desktop versions of Microsoft Office, Explorer, Internet Explorer and Windows Live apps. See Windows on ARM and tile-based interface.

These screens highlight the Metro style tablet design. The top image is the tile-based Start screen, while the middle image is a virtual keyboard.
Metro/Desktop Differentiation
On a PC, which runs both Desktop and Metro apps, the icon style on the Start menu indicates their type.
