Definition: Windows Phone
A smartphone operating system from Microsoft, introduced in 2010. Using a touch screen interface reminiscent of Microsoft's Zune HD music player, and based on the Windows CE operating system, Windows Phone is a vast departure from Microsoft's previous mobile platform, which was not successful. Due to its integration with Office documents and partnership with Nokia, which replaced its venerable Symbian OS with Windows Phone, it is expected to gain considerable market share. See Windows Mobile and Symbian.
Integration of Office and Social Media
A major feature of Windows Phone 7, the first release, is the integration of Microsoft Office (most Office documents can be edited on the phone). In addition, messages from Facebook and Windows Live can be viewed without having to open each application. Windows Phone also has a built-in music player, which can communicate wireless to the Zune software in the PC.
Mango, Tango and Apollo
The first release was Windows Phone 7. In September 2011, Microsoft released Version 7.5, code named Mango. Along with more refined Office, Bing and social network integration, Mango added a huge number of new features and tweaks, including app switching.
In 2012, Tango and Apollo are upgrades that are expected to include the following: Tango runs in as little as 256MB of RAM for less costly devices, while Apollo is a major upgrade to Windows Phone 8 that replaces Windows CE with an OS derived from the desktop Windows 8 OS. See Zune, Windows Phone Marketplace and Windows Mobile.
