Definition: Zune
A digital music and video service from Microsoft for Windows PCs, Windows Phones and Xbox. Introduced in the fall of 2006, the Zune brand referred to the entire system, including portable player, software and music store. In late 2011, Microsoft announced the end of the stand-alone player, because the Zune functionality was built into Windows Phone.
Multimedia Formats
Audio formats supported are MP3, WMA and unprotected AAC audio. The Zune also handles H.264, MPEG-4 and WMV video as well as JPEG images.
Zune Models
Launched more than five years after the iPod, the 30GB hard disk-based handheld player included Wi-Fi, FM radio and a 3" screen. Although it resembled the iPod's original scroll wheel, the Zune's control was actually a button cover. Various smaller and larger models followed with hard disks up to 120GB and flash storage from 4GB to 64GB. A unique type of control was added on subsequent models, evolving into a touch screen for the final Zune HD in late 2009, which included HD Radio and HD video out.
