Toshiba completes experimental datacentre facility

Toshiba has completed an experimental datacentre demonstration facility in Japan as an overture for worldwide expansion.

On Monday the company announced that if the modular datacentre push is successful in the Japanese market, then it will expand the products worldwide.

A growth in the data generated by both the public and private sectors will grow demand for datacentres, according to a statement by the company.

The experimental datacentre facility (pictured) combines free air cooling with a steel frame modular design that allows containerised mini-datacentres to be stacked on top of one another, then hooked into the uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

According to Toshiba figures, when no air conditioning is needed and air cooling — also known as free cooling — is used, the facility can attain a power efficiency rating — known in the industry as a power usage effectiveness (PUE) rating — of 1.3.

The server module has a maximum load of up to nine racks or 46 servers, according to Toshiba.
