Google launches AdWords credit card for small British businesses

Summary: The card, which comes with the backing of Barclaycard, is only to be used to buy AdWords. Google says it expects those businesses that take it up to use it as their primary means of buying advertising on its services.


Google has brought out its first credit card, which is aimed at small businesses that want credit to buy AdWords.

The AdWords Business Credit card, which is effectively a rebranded Barclaycard, can only be used for buying advertising on Google's services. Available now in the UK, the card has previously been trialled in the US.

"In a survey conducted after the pilot launched, 74 percent of respondents said they now use AdWords Business Credit as their primary form of AdWords payment," Google vice president Brent Callinicos wrote in a blog post on Sunday.

"Starting today, we'll invite businesses to use AdWords Business Credit in the UK and extend more invitations in the US later this month."

Google's move into credit provision comes at the same time as Amazon's launch of Amazon Lending, through which the online retailer's small business sellers can borrow money for buying inventory.

In the UK, the AdWords Business Credit card comes with a representative APR of 11.9 percent. In the US, rates start at 8.99 percent.
