Short clip: CIOs discuss SaaS challenges

>> Well, you just finished telling me how you were going to be all SAP all the time. You know for the next however many years and you like that, but here's all these little software companies starting to provide software's and services.

>> That's right.

>> Services, tools you can use to build internally to mix and match. It's kind of a different model than we've been talking about. So I guess I'm wondering, was that buzz from two years ago? SOA or is it real important now?

>> I think the model's evolving to a service-oriented model where you can acquire services. Are we there yet? No. And is SAP there yet? No, but their, their next layers, the next delivery is really open up more to that service, buy a service here, buy a service there, connect it in through Net Weaver.

>> Yeah, I would tend to agree. I think this is, it's an infrastructure investment that needs to be supported by the vendors and the, the, the smaller companies that are trying to surround and play off the vendors. And I think it's far more of an issue for the, the direction that the providers want to take than it is the companies. You know we're going to consume what they deliver. We'd love to have the promises behind SOA. It's not us, up to us to provide it.

>> Ok. I think at the level of detail that you just described, we're a big producer of things that are inaudible and a big consumer both internally and in our product. But the label isn't particularly useful. I think what Randy just said is a really good description that is useful. You know producing and consuming different services. The particular mechanics of that buzzword I don't, I don't like particularly.

>> Yeah, I would agree with Randy.

>> So I would, even SAP or local type environments, nobody's going to be 100% of anything. So the challenge that I think most of us have is how you integrate these non-SAP types things into it. Because at the end of the day it's the integration that's going drive the value. And I think Randy said it really well. It's over time as the, the vendor community and the maturity of the tools and the environment becomes better, I think it'll be easier to, to make that, that integration. But I don't think it's there today.
