Apple TV has gone streaming

Steve Jobs: We are introducing the second generation of Apple TV today and this is what it looks like.

Applause Steve Jobs: It is a fourth the size. You can hold it in the palm of your hand. I have one here actually. Look at this. That is it. Around the back it is really simple. It's got the power supply built in it. There is no power brick and all you need, just plug in the power cord. One HDMI connector to go to your TV which brings digital video and 5.1 surround sound. And, if you have a terrestrial Ethernet, you can plug it in. Most of us don't so we built in Wi-Fi, 802.11n. So you don't even need a hard network connection. It's really simple. It's got a great remote with it, really beautiful aluminum remote. It's all HD when the content is available. We have gone to the rental model for this. There's no purchases on Apple TV anymore. You rent everything. To rent HDTV shows, they are going to be 99 cents. So, we have got ABC and Fox taking the step with us, going to be offering their shows for 99 cents. We think the rest of the studios will see the light and get on board pretty fast with us. In addition to renting Hollywood first-run movies and TV shows, you can also, if you are a Netflix subscriber, stream content from Netflix' streaming library. On the Internet, you can watch, if you are a Netflix subscriber, you can watch films from their streaming library, YouTube, thousands of podcasts, audio and video podcasts, MobileMe content, Flickr, lots of Internet radio stations, again all available right on Apple TV. And my own computer, I can get in there and listen to all my music or any other content I have on the computer. So, let me go into top movies right here. Here's Iron Man right here. I can watch a free preview, of course. I can see all the films that other people rented that rented Iron Man too, and I can just scroll down here if I want to and again, I can, Robert Downey, Jr., I can see what other films he was in. These are all the other films, or Gwyneth Paltrow. I can look at customer reviews and I can look at the Rotten Tomato reviews. It is pretty nice. So, I can rent this in HD for 4.99 just by clicking the button and within a few seconds, it is going to tell me it is ready to start watching and I can watch it later or I can watch it now.

Sound effects Steve Jobs: Let's go onto TV shows. Favorite TV shows. So let's say Glee is the most important show to me, I can just hold my button down, it starts to jiggle and I can move it over here. So, that is fine. I will always see Glee and there is one episode I haven't seen. Let me go ahead and rent that episode for 99 cents.

Music Steve Jobs: Let's go to Netflix and I can watch any one of these movies for free if I am a Netflix subscriber. Now, let me show you something else that is really cool. You are going to be able to be watching a movie, walk into your living room, and push a button and watch the rest of it on your Apple TV. And now, I can decide where to go ahead and stream it to and I'll say the family room Apple TV which is this one. And so, in a second or two, there we go. So, that gives you an overview of Apple TV. And so, we are going to lower the price from 299 for the old Apple TV to just $99 for the new Apple TV. The new Apple TV is available later this month, in about four weeks and you can preorder today.

  • RE: Apple TV has gone streaming
looks noice, but I have windows streaming, ps3 streaming, ubuntu streaming and now apple streaming. I am sick of incompatible streaming. I want to watch live DTV streams on my N95, iPhone, iPad, Ubuntu, PDA, win7 boxen, as well as watch my iTunes and other stream services, and games too - but this is simply not possible as each corporate monstrosity seeks lock in. I like apple and their not so greedy rental options, but I can see that changing as all service lock ins do - like my foxtel experience I will end up with less for more as the 'offer' is smoshed around to shove ads up my wazoo (that I pay for) fave channels will be morphed away into other 'services' and 'hackers' will appear to bunt me away from using even a fraction of what I have paid for and am entitled to, just like my standard internet connection... my privacy will be violated more and more as my services will be used to shape ME instead of vice-versa. And the perverts of the world will use patriot act, DRM and DMCA and find ever more devious ways to rustle around my underpants (and molest my family and friends too) through a brand new conduit...

All rental means Apple has decided unilaterally to remove our ability to buy and watch several times without paying "per view". ...and then has the gall to play "any way you want it" in the same new product launch.
