Dreamforce '08: New cloud applications revealed

>> Sam: Hello I'm Sam Diaz for ZDNet. A couple of the big things at this year's Dream Force conference revolve around the idea that

traditional software continues its demise and cloud computing is on the rise. We spoke with a couple of vendors here who talked about

businesses are deploying these technologies. What exactly are we looking at?

>> This is hot off the press; this is what SalesForce.com actually released this morning. We had a healthcare company approach us and

asked us to help them launch a new business in an emerging market, so in a period of a few weeks we built a social networking site

for that emerging market that allows doctors and patients to find each other on-line without any training on a public site. This all

integrates directly back into SalesForce.com and lets that healthcare company to manage their doctors and patients in a real time Cloud

environment.

>> What this application does is it looks at all of your Facebook friends and compares it to all of your companies job postings and

suggests referrals for you to make, you might never think to refer your friend Mark Benioff assumed spelling for a job at VPS Sales

for Hawaii at Dell but this application will suggest that referral, you can follow up on that, send a referral to Mark and when Mark

actually applies and gets that job you're going to get the employee referral bonus.

>> Sam: How does this signify the end of traditional software as we know it?

>> You would never be able to bring together two on-demand applications like this with traditional enterprise software. I joined

Aperio from SAP, one of the biggest enterprise software companies, we would have loved to have brought a social network together with

SAP we just can't do it. The only reason you can make these sort of connections between the different parts of The Cloud is you're

dealing with two powerful open on-demand platforms, that's what makes this so exciting, I think we're just at the beginning.

>> Well, this is a list of all the applications that you use during the workday or even afterward; these are applications that you

use to manage your customers, these are, ya know, all the services that you've got subscriptions for and all the services that you use

to arrange your travel, maybe all the services that you use to take a look at your 401K and other things that are work related, semi

work related and maybe personally related; these are all the applications that you currently have user ID's and passwords for. You

sign into this service with only one user ID and password and we sign you on to all the others you don't have to remember anymore

user ID's and passwords.

>> Sam: As we head into 2009 and economic conditions remain uncertain a big question remains, will companies continue to do things

the old way or will they invest in new technologies?
