Ease of use, yes ... myspace was a little late with their 2.0 interface, but they did allow people to view pages without logging in - good for public pages, still popular with music artists. Anyone who got curious about FB realized that they had to join just to poke around. That could be considered a pain, or a great business plan. I think it's one of the major reasons for its growth (totally opinion, I have no data).
