IBM: 'Consumerization' of IT driving cloud adoption

Background noise

>>Let's talk about how IT Delivery Technology is changing and what role Cloud Computing plays in this context. So, let's look at 3 of the big, and one might say, hyped, over-hyped perhaps to a degree trends are contributing to the change of the IT Delivery landscape, and what it actually means in terms of enterprise, in terms of enterprise IT reality. So consumerizaton of IT; well, I think the most powerful notion about Cloud is actually that it comes from the consumer internet and it drives expectations on how you would want to access IT services; self-service, a consumer friendly interface, flexible resources in the back end, not actually knowing where in the Cloud, so to speak, the resources are, very important expectations and they drive, very significantly drive, how the IT Delivery structure in the enterprise and spanning enterprises and reaching out from the enterprise needs to behave. And when you look at what happened in other industries that introduced these elements of self-service like banking with ATM's, like telephony with electronic switches, in each and every case it has driven an industrialization of the delivery infrastructure; centralization, standardization, introduction of service management to deliver visibility control and automation of, well the marshalling of the resources that deliver the services and managing of the IT resources in the context of service delivery. And that's really what I see as the actual enterprise meaning of convergence of the infrastructure. It's really the infrastructure coming together under the umbrella of service of management which allows the optimization of delivery systems. And that also, I think is the real meaning of the big switch. It doesn't mean that we all jump from here to there, that we all jump from one environment to another environment, the big switch is actually that customers, that IT organizations have choices how to deploy IT services, where to deploy, where to deploy them, who to source them from. And that's actually one of the most significant discussions that I had when I was new in my job of having moved from CGO of IBM software to CGO of Cloud computing, one of the first discussions I had with a, an IT team was, well they said, "Well, we want to understand how Cloud computing fits, where it fits on our journey from being basically the builders and owners of IT assets to an organization that sources IT solutions." And I think that is the journey that Cloud computing is driving forward.
