NetSuite CEO touts 'customizable' cloud

>>The most important topic I'll discuss today is customization and this is the myth that it's the Achilles' heel of cloud computing. I actually believe it's the winning, the reason why people ultimately are successful with the cloud and the productivity you gain are because of the customization of these technologies. This is SAP's website; they're coming out with a new on demand product called Business ByDesign one of these days. And if you look at the second tab, they have a second tab that says "Is SAPs right for you? Here are the things you should consider to make sure SAPs is right for you" and I think the third bullet or fourth bullet on there is "SAPs is right for you if you don't require customization." I'm like well that interesting. You know, let's look at actually somebody delivering ERP based suites to the world, NetSuite 6600 Customers, and let's see the features that they're actually using in the application to see if that's true. If customers running on demand based suites don't need customization so we did a little family feud thing. We surveyed 6600 customers and we took a look at their most used features. So, the most used features in NetSuite, the top six, are number six: more than half our customers used the combined suite, CRM and ERP together. So, that's interesting and you'd expect that with NetSuite because that's sort of the idea is to provide a system that runs cross departmentally and you'd run your business processes across. Number five, most people do their orders in NetSuite, you actually might think this would be higher, so orders and invoicing are the fifth most frequently used feature. Number four is something we call suite script, our most complex customization technology, you actually can write code, write new applications on top of NetSuite, so the fourth most used feature is our most complex customization feature. Number three, custom dash boards, low and behold, people want to actually track data specific to their industry so we can customizing the data model and then ultimately the presentation layer to look at key performance indicators appropriate for a wholesaler distributor versus a software company, etc. So, again, another customization feature. Number two, shockingly, journal entries is not the top feature for an accounting application in NetSuite's case, it's the second most used feature. And the number one feature, custom records, the ability to add table to the data base, track entities that we don't track natively in the system. So, unlike SAP's perspective that SAPs is right for you if you don't require customization from a real world example the largest installed base of ERP on demand systems, three of the top four features are customization. So, at the end of the day, not only do you need customization, it's required to serve this market place.

One of the side effects of cloud computing that seems to be getting sidetracked is what could happen to IT personnel. The survey found that respondents were split on the impact of cloud computing on IT manageability, and at least 74% of respondents think cloud computing would lead to an increase in hiring or might not have an impact at all.

To others, this sounds a bit too good to be true, and a backlash against a silver bullet, cloud hype mentality is inevitable and is probably healthy. Yet, we find that there is also unfounded cynicism about cloud computing and underserved doubt.

So, where is the golden mean, a proper context for real-world and likely cloud value? And, what are the roadblocks that enterprises may encounter that would prevent them from appreciating the true potential for cloud, while also avoiding the risks?

We assembled a panel to identify and debunk myths on the road to cloud-computing adoption. Such myths can cause confusion and hold IT back from embracing cloud model sooner rather than later. We also define some clear ways to get the best out of cloud virtues without stumbling.

Joining our discussion about the right balance of cloud risk and reward are Ajay Patel, a Technology Leader at Agilysys; Rick Parker, IT Director for Fetch Technologies, and Jay Muelhoefer, Vice President of Enterprise Marketing at Platform Computing. The discussion is moderated by Dana Gardner, Principal Analyst at Interarbor ipad bag blog of best sutudeg community the modern education news and Solutions.
