PARC scientist recalls Jobs' famous Xerox visits

At a Churchill Club event in San Jose, Calif., former PARC engineer Larry Tesler talks about Steve Jobs' trips to Xerox's PARC, including the one where Jobs eyed the company's graphical user interface prototype, which ended up making it into the Mac OS. Tesler decided to leave Xerox soon after and started working at Apple.

Fantastic presentation. The time Steve Jobs was allowed to roam around PARC is probably the most mythologized moment in tech history. It's nice to see the reality fleshed out a bit.

Finally the truth comes out and it is clear that Apple bought the ideas, had right away the possibilities that Xerox was blind to and it shows really how Mr. Job's mind worked. All the palaver over the years about how Jobs got a look and stole the ideas is not in the least true. Xerox sold Apple this research for the mutual benefit of both as they saw it then. In the end, every corporation gets ideas not only from within but through hopefully legitimate business means just as Apple did here. Recall those of you who do remember, iTunes was an outgrowth of another acquisition years ago and it went well beyond the original idea. That is how things work. One builds on the shoulders of giants.

And that was about 1% of what PARC had developed...
