At Apple's WWDC in San Francisco, the company's SVP of iPhone software, Scott Forstall, demos a new app, "Find My iPhone," that helps people find their phone if it gets lost--the software pinpoints on a map where the device is located. Users can also send an alert to the phone announcing it is lost.

>> This next feature's a great one.

Laughter If you've ever misplaced or lost your phone, it can somewhat well traumatic.

Phone ringing

>> How are you calling me?

>> I lost my phone and this jagweed assumed spelling cabbie has it. Hey stop harassing my friends Aseef assumed spelling.

>> Hey Liz. I just wanted to let you know that I found that special picture that you took with your phone.

>> What picture? Oh my God.

>> Yes, that one.

>> There's a picture on my phone - an adult picture - of me.

>> Laughter What?

>> Drew took it as a joke. I'm making a face like this. Why am I telling you this?

>> Top and bottom. May I speak with Aseef?

>> Okay what do you want?

>> Two thousand cash or I email the picture to everyone in your address book.

Laughter and Applause

>> Now hopefully you haven't had a 30-Rock experience, but it's for situations like this that we created Find My iPhone. Now Find my iPhone is really a service which is available only to MobileMe customers on iPhone OS 3 0.

Applause If you lose or misplace your phone, you can log into MobileMe on any web browser and it will show you on a map where your phone is.

Applause So it might show you that you left it at the restaurant from last night. Well, it's easy. You can send it a message. You can send a message with your home phone and have it play a sound. This alert sound plays whether or not you left it in silent mode.

Applause So here the waiter the can find it, call you at home and tell you he has your phone. If you're like me and it shows you your phone's actually at your house...

Laughter ...that alert sound still plays even if you have it in silent mode. You can walk around your house until you realize the kids hid it underneath the couch.

Laughter Now, if your phone really is lost or stolen you can send it a remote wipe command which will delete all your data.

Applause This will erase all of your contacts, your mail, everything so you know that your private data remains private. And if you ever do find the phone again, just plug it back into iTunes and it will restore from backup. That is Find My iPhone.
