Google introduces the Nexus One smartphone

Google introduces the Nexus One smartphone

Summary: At Google's headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., Google VP of Product Management Mario Queiroz and Android Senior Product Manager Erick Tseng demo the new Google Nexus One smartphone, or as he calls it, "superphone." The new phone is made with HTC hardware and runs Google's Android 2.1 OS. Some of the features include GPS with Google Maps and turn-by-turn navigation, an accelerometer, a virtual keyboard, a light sensor for adjusting the display to save battery power, a proximity sensor, a compass, a 5-megapixel camera with an LED flash, Wi-Fi, a new media gallery interface with access to Picasa and YouTube, Facebook access, and stereo Bluetooth.

  • Good to have a solid competitor

Nice to see this isn't just hype. While all the mystery leading up to the Nexus was interesting, I would have preferred something a little more solid/official from the marketing department leading up to the holiday gift giving. All the technopundits were going back and forth on hoax/not hoax and nothing official from the Big G (and 'leaked by staff' doesn't count). I just sunk my teeth into two two-year AT&T iPhone contracts on Christmas Eve. I would rather have gone with the Nexus, but "maybe this exists and if so maybe it will be here in mid-2010" didn't cut it for me.

  • what happens when your Google account is locked and you have a smart phone?

I just recently started a bad experience with Google. For reasons unknown to me, Google decided to permanently disable my Google account which includes all services tied to it. I just started using my Google services again in hopes of taking advantage of calendaring and possibly getting a Nexus phone depending on how well it integrates and eventually ditching my own Zimbra server.

I took a huge step back today. What if this happened to me and I had a Nexus phone all tightly integrated in Google. Now my calendar is gone, my contacts are gone, my e-mail is gone.. YIKES!

Nope.. it may be a cool phone, but if it's tied to Google services, I won't be getting one - at least not for that reason. The iPhone tied to my own Zimbra server is looking like a much more sensible option. At least I'd own my bits.

  • Get real

Do you not back up your contacts on the pc? Do you not have more than one google account like everyone else? My iphone crashes all the time but at least I have backed up my phone...My biggest grip with the iphone is it crashes and looses my contacts everytime I go to my local hospital..this is also the experience of two other friends...nothing is perfect but nexus will get better and better whilst iphone users will get more and more out of date....I will not get a iphone again as price fixing scams are not my thing in a recession!

What I want to know is do they spy on the phones also?
    gastonlw@...
    • Really?...

Come on... if anything you learn, is to BackUp! BackUp! BackUp!

ow for the spy ?, yes they do. They being the US government as it has been done to me. As tech gets smaller and faster, spying gets easier. It happened to me cause of wrong place at wrong time going to China during the China and US face off thing a few years ago. If your talking about google spying, then i'm not sure on that but if everything is through them then I'd assume they could if they wanted to.

But I like this phone and will be getting it soon... unlocked ver of course.

Although Google is selling a carrier-neutral version of its heavily anticipated Nexus One smartphone directly to consumers, the tactic is unlikely to break up the wireless business model of carrier-device monogamy in the United States. fsa authorised life settlement fund
