what kind of protection will that be if a email with virus comes in and there is no antivirus or os to control it?
sounds good on paper but a whole new avenue for hackers!!!!!!!!!!

except
There is an operating system, it's called Linux, and it's actually quite secure, especially when it's being used in the manner described in the Video.
But Linux is already exceptionally secure even when used in a standard desktop mode, my Mandriva Linux http://mandriva.com/ powered laptop does not require anti virus software, and it receives regular, sometimes daily updates to the software on it, some of these updates are security patches which are supplied proactively rather than reactively, as is the case with Windows.

RE: A world without Windows?
How about a system that would allow a computer to run all kinds of great applications without ever loading Windows at all...oh wait, they already have that. It's called a Mac.
onray18th Aug 2008 -
Actually
a better one is called Linux. The same Operating System that makes the instant on technology that is being talked about in the Video possible.

RE: A world without Windows?
I think that it would be useful for ZDNET to change to a less recent version of Flash, or to some open source video broadcaster that is available to all operating systems.

videos in general
I think it would also be great if ZDNet would make transcripts of its videos available so they could be read, instead of requiring the bandwidth needed for video play in order to receive the information.

Videos in general
Absolutely. Videos take longer to download and much longer to listen to. I dont have that kind of time to waste.
dixon757@...23rd Jun 2009 -
The instant on technology is of course Linux
It's the Linux Operating System that makes this instant on technology possible, and it's Linux that is running when you have gone around that other operating system.
tracy anne18th Aug 2008 -
Most likely
Cause this is embedded kind of technology.. ofc there is some form of an OS. i guess some really stripped down version of something like Linux yes.. but then stored in chips instead of discs..
So you get the idea that it can be on instantly.
I think the general utility PC will be replaced by an appliance for office business in the long run, but i think this comes a tad too early.
Then again.. might as well, start with it at some point. right?

I've been saying it for years.

RE: A world without Windows?
Can you say Mac? Can you say, "boots up in about 15 seconds"?
b.t@...18th Aug 2008 -
So does my Mandriva Linux powered laptop
So what.
Why don't you give Mandriva Linux http://mandriva.com/ a try, they even have PPC versions, if you are using a PPC Mac, that will rejuvenate an older Mac, and, of course, the x86 version will simply install right on to an x86 Mac. Of course you could run Mandriva Linux as a dual boot option, or even inside a VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ VM, or better still, assuming Apple allow you to use the software you've paid for as you choose, which I doubt, install Mandriva Linux and run MacOSx inside the VirtualBox VM.

Tried two flavors of Linux
Ubuntu and Knoppix. I was underwhelmed with everything on them but Open Office, which also runs just fine on Windows and Mac. Call me when Linux can run all the commercial applications for Windows and Mac, and we'll talk.

Indeed, that is the ultimate way.
