Speaker: Thank you, Oracle. Silicon Valley needed a big tech merger, and this one is a doozy, A 7.4 billion dollar offer for Sun Microsystems that seemed to come out of left field. The tech community was still licking its wounds over the breakdown in talks between IBM and Sun when Oracle stepped into the picture with its premium offer. And suddenly, champagne bottles are popping open. Sun found a buyer that will likely want to put its technology to work immediately. And Oracle came across a no-fuss opportunity to get the technology it needs to compete on the big stage. In the enterprise world lately, it's been all Cisco, HP, IBM, and Dell, and their plans for the modern-day data center. Now, here comes Oracle, loaded up with its recent acquisitions. From apps all the way to the data center, Oracle is positioning itself to come in as a one-stop player, complete with business hardware, business software, and even a computing language in Java. Mergers and big announcements can be a big deal, the types of shakeups that re-ignite competition and innovation. Oracle made the first move by putting Sun out of its misery. Now, we're just waiting on Yahoo and Microsoft to summon the tech press for news of their own.
