Steve Jobs: Magic moments on stage

reel sounds

>> It's really beautiful. This is what it looks like.

applause

>> I'll tell you this; this is made incredibly durably. This is polycarbonate plastic, the stuff they make bulletproof vests out of. But we've gone one step further, we double shot it in rubber all the way around. So what you see in orange is all rubber. It feels wonderful and it makes the unit even safer to travel with; again, all on the back. When you open it up it's really beautiful inside. And the iMac's got a fantastic 15-inch display. But today we're introducing a model with a 17-inch landscape display. Let's go ahead and take a look at it.

>> We are opening twenty-five Apple owned retail stores across the U.S. this calendar year, in 2001. Twenty-five. And the first two stores will open this Saturday here at Tysons Corner in McLean, Virginia and at Glendale Mall in Glendale, California across the other side of the country. Why these two? Because they were the first two that were ready. There's nothing magic about it.

>> You can trust that we know Mac OS X is not perfect. We think it's a tremendous start. And we think already in many instances we are way above anything else on the market in terms of certain aspects of performance, in terms of certain features, but we're not stopping there. And we are continuously going to improve this OS, so that it is the best in the world in every respect. And your criticisms and feedback help us a lot, so keep them coming. We are listening.

>> Today we are announcing that the second generation iTunes doesn't just run on the Mac, but it runs on Windows too; exactly the same thing on Mac and on Windows. Not

applause

>> This is not some baby version of iTunes or the music store; it's the whole thing. iTunes for Windows is probably the best Windows app ever written. There is one more thing.

applause

>> One more small thing. When we were inventing all of the technology to build this, tremendous technology to be able to do this. It's way far ahead of what anyone in the industry is capable of doing. We decided to apply that technology to something a little smaller, which is this. Yeah. Want to see that again? A new 12-inch PowerBook. It's the world's thinnest notebook. It's so thin it even fits inside one of these envelopes that we've all seen floating around the office. And so let me go ahead and show it to you now.

applause

>> This is it. Let me take it out here.

oh's from audience

>> This is the new MacBook Air. And you can get a feel for how thin it is. Yeah, there it is. Now, stop me if you've already seen this.

laughter, applause

>> Believe me, you ain't seen it. You've got to see this thing in person. It is one of the most beautiful designs you've ever seen. This is, beyond a doubt, the most precise thing, one of the most beautiful thing's we've ever made; glass on the front and the rear and stainless steel running around. And the precision of which this is made is beyond any consumer product we've ever seen. Its closest kin is like a beautiful old Lika phonetic camera, and we'd like to show it to you today for the first time. And we call it the iPad. And again to see the whole web page is phenomenal. Right there holding the Internet in your hand. It's an incredible experience.

>> Keeping these devices in sync is driving us crazy, and we call it iCloud.

applause, reel sounds

Alas, I can't watch a video of Apple successes from my (flash-less) iPad 2! Ironic to say the least.

@smithrg

The fact that zdnet is falling behind by not implementing html5 is hardly a fault in the iPad 2. Even Adobe is aware that Flash is dying.

BTW a little respect for Steve rather than bashing a product might be in order
Steve Jobs = Tony Stark?
"One of the best things that we have ever made"

The product was made, and a a lot of the design was no doubt carried out by Chinese manufacturers. To what extent is Apple a front for such superb manufacturers. Systems, such as iTunes sure...but more and more Apple seems to be relying on the wow of superb piece of Chinese hardware. And presumably, like Lenovo, these hardware manufactures will one day brand their hardware themselves. And Afaik, nothing like it is made in the USA.

The design of the products is done by apple, otherwise these chineese manufacturers would have been first to market.

Nothing comes into being without first being innovated. Innovation is the source of all value. Apple has done its share of technological innovation, and so have many others. So far, most of them don't reside in China. In fact, who do you think taught the superb manufacturers in China how to BE superb manufacturers...the communists who required parents to drown their baby girls?

Calling Apple "a front for such...manufacturers" is exactly backwards. Yes--the nuts-and-bolts guys that Apple hires to build their designs do a terrific job, but without Apple's ideas, they would have nothing to build.
So sad watching him decay from year to year after he had surgery. I'm no Apple fan and not really a Steve fan 100%, but whatever your tech of choice, you still have to feel for the guy. He was special and will be missed.
@goombawa ditto although I'm an Apple and Jobs fan.
@goombawa what you have to admire is the fact that he changed the tech world not once, but twice. First was in 1984 with the introduction of Mac OS, and then again in 2007 with the iPhone. The first was copied by Microsoft, and the latter was copied by Android. So no matter what your feelings about Apple are, recognize the changes the company brought to everyones lives.
What is he talking about. iTunes is NOT the same on Windows. Heavy on both memory and cpu, unnecessary processes and services running, and annoying updating software. All of these are hard to get rid of, if you want to be still using iTunes, because people do, otherwise you can't put music on your iPod. With any other normal mp3-player you connect to Windows will be able to transfer all the stuff through the filemanager, Explorer.

They sure didn't know how to develop a proper program for a Windows computer.
I can't watch it either on a Powerbook G4! Steve, what have you done?
