TiVo's new strategy: Too little, too late?

September 3, 2008, 9:48am PDT | Length: 00:01:44
ZDNet Senior Editor Sam Diaz says it's time for TiVo to focus its resources on licensing its technologies for the non-TiVo DVR boxes offered by cable and satellite TV providers. TiVo should abandon developing its standalone set-top boxes, since it has never been good at luring a mainstream customer base, Diaz says.

  • There's more to it than that
I say Tivo's loss has more to do with their higher costs. At least that's why I got a DVR from my cable provider (Bright House) and not from Tivo.

First you pay $150 for the Tivo box, then you pay $13 a month for basically guide information. The DVR I get from my cable provider is $7 a month, plus you don't have to buy the box. And the TV tuner in their DVR can access the digital cable channels without the aid of a cable box.

With price comparisons like this, people are never going to switch to Tivo, just because it has a few nicer features in the user interface. It would make a lot more sense for them to license this technology to cable and satellite providers, instead of trying to sucker the public into buying it.

  • i totally agree
I have a DirectTivo. I have yet to see a comparable (even HD) DVR from DirectTv.
So, I am very open to other networks and options.

I can handle the small difference in the cost per month if I want to really buy a new Tivo.

But, I first have to swallow the large upfront difference in cost.

so, I'll have to compare the options more before making the decision.
