A 45 minute outage of Virgin Blue's check-in system last night left passengers stranded for several hours.

The crash occurred at 7pm last night and left staff unable to process any bookings, including those made via its Web site.

The 45 minute outage caused delays to departures several hours afterwards. The worst affected passengers were in Sydney and Melbourne, according to ABC News.

A spokesperson for Virgin Blue told ZDNet.com.au that most problems caused by the outage had been resolved by 9:30pm yesterday, however 100 passengers affected by the outage were placed in a hotel overnight.

The spokesperson could not say what caused the outage, but staff were forced to revert to manually checking in passengers.

Virgin Blue's check-in system was also blamed for causing extended delays to flights in 2004 and 2005, both times affecting passengers in eastern states.
