NEW YORK -- For businesses still unsure about jumping to the cloud, Christian Paulus, director of production application management at VMware, says that the cloud is simply just a "new" way to consume IT services.

He summed up that it's not about where services run that matters most -- but how.

"IT goals haven't really changed over the last decade," remarked Paulus, while speaking at SugarCon 2013 at the Waldorf Astoria hotel on Wednesday.

"IT goals haven't really changed over the last decade," remarked Paulus.

Paulus pointed towards a recent Gartner survey from March 2012, which found that agility and speed were picked as the top drivers for private cloud computing with 57 percent of the vote, followed by business alignment and costs, respectively.

"The consumption models have fundamentally changed, which has been the main driver of the cloud," Paulus described.

He continued that some of other things that have dramatically increased are "tremendous amounts of workloads," such as applications like SugarCRM but also middleware along with custom and legacy apps.

Paulus defined that the deployment has become the control point for transferring workloads to various destinations, whether they be virtual environments or private and public clouds (or a combo of the two).

"The whole mechanism behind this has changed," Paulus reflected, adding that there is continuous change too for managing these workloads and apps too.

Being that his keynote was at Sugar's annual powwow, Paulus concluded with a brief demo of how SugarCRM can be deployed on VMware's vFabric Application Director, touting that it can speed up app deployments while offering more flexibility to choose a consumption model.
