VMware has acquired Socialcast, a collaboration company, for an undisclosed sum, as it aims for a role as a desktop collaboration player.

VMware said in a statement that it will use Socialcast — along with the acquisitions of SlideRocket and Zimbra — to build its "modern end-user computing model". Along with VMware's Horizon App Manager, the move seems to indicate that the company is encroaching on Citrix's turf.

According to VMware, the plan is to provide access to desktop applications on any device. Citrix with its Receiver and portfolio of tools such as GoToMeeting has staked out a similar position.
