A Telstra Bass Strait fibre link from Tasmania to Victoria went down today after severe weather severed the cable.

Services were unaffected by the break, which struck the cable at its junction in north-west Tasmania.

Telstra's second link was untouched, as was the remaining fibre cable owned by rival Basslink.

The sole link providing fixed-line and internet services via microwave to Flinders Island was also lost due to storm damage.

Residents on the island contacted by ZDNet Australia were unable to access normal communications services from about 10pm last night until 2pm today.

Telstra distributed satellite phones to allow residents to make free calls.

  • Bad weather in Bass Strait - who would have thought of it? Not Telstra, apparently.
