Apple has released iOS 7.1, the latest update to its iPhones and iPads. The software was made available for download on Monday, a week shy of six months after a radically redesigned iOS 7 was released.

Here's what's new in iOS 7.1, including bug fixes and user interface improvements.

  • Phone app tweaked with rounded buttons

The iPhone's main feature, the Phone app, has been redesigned with rounded buttons instead of square spaces. The background still blurrs through when a button is pressed.

  • Will Wait..

... for jailbreak. Nothing really interesting in this release.
  • Ugly

Still looks washed out and ugly. There is also no fixing the gold and pastel color clashing. Icons are so static and boring. iOS features are Ok, but Apple is slipping on the aesthetics.

    • Icons do what they are supposed to

Launch programs. iOS, like Android, deals with dynamic information using notifications.

I wasn't thrilled with the aesthetics when it first launched. But it has grown on me... the parallax effect is neat, and I find it subtle. The icons don't look so 2D when you see them floating above a 3D background.

Not thrilled with some of the apps new look (like the music player, Safari, and the settings app), but the home page and icons with the pull up flashlight and the pull down notifications.... I think it is a nice combination of simplicity and elegance.
    • What a Troll..

I never was suer what a troll was..i saw you leave a negative comment about Apple on another article..... every body called you a troll...i now know what a troll is..and its you....and...I'm sorry your parents named you Sean.....what a punk name..
      • What a..

great name Pharoh7 is. You rock. When you spot a troll or dislike a comment your supposed to use the flag option, like I just did to your last comment. btw - my parents said Hi.

        • Nice job Sean...

You did well... nice job in handling that
          • I agree.

            Put her in her place.
        • NO,NO,NO!

The flag is for comments containing profanity, vulgarity, threats or spam! NOT, I REPEAT. NOT, just because you dislike it! Sheesh...oh, by the way...STOP TROLLING!

          • Oh, and just an FYI..

(that's "for your information" in case you don't know what it means) the "vote" doesn't do ANYTHING!
Really, you people amaze and amuse me with your supposed knowledge of how things work here.

          • If you are a moderator

You shouldn't be. There is a certain level of decorum expected from those who moderate. If you can't moderate without berating or coming off as petty than you are worse than a troller. IMHO. (In my honest opinion.)

          • What did zdnet expect?

With no way to register a dislike without engaging plonkers like foley.
          • I think most of the confusion about flag/vote

stems from the former comment system that registered the votes and gave a rank, and the flag would eventually get to a point the comment would be hidden (unless you had options set to view all). I've sent requests for changes, and have been told things are being worked on.

Hang on, hang on, are you really a major software giant's CEO in disguise!!!???

  • It's Better, but still sort of ugly

The ability to have the things pop a little more is easier on the eyes, but there is no darker keyboard option. Darn. Although, they did make the standard keyboard easier to read.
    • dark keyboard option

there is a dark keyboard option with this update...
      • Dark keyboard option

I don't see anything in the Accessibility section like described in the beta. iPhone 5s here, just updated today.
        • Dark Keyboard

Yeah, that's what I was going to ask; where is that feature? I updated a day or so ago and would like to try it but it ain't there.

  • "Add a contact..."??

"Add a contact directly from the Phone app" is new?

I can do this on 7.0.6, and have been able to before that.
    • They made it easier.

      That's all.
  • Who Did This?

The "Slide to power-off" widget left side margin is not matching the top and bottom ones.
It creates an unaesthetically amateurish effect.

For the rest, it's fine. Just fine. More coherent.
