Wind turbine powers GE electric vehicle charger

I live in New Jersey, so I have seen my fair share of solar installations -- some of which are sited in parking lots, where they may or may not be charging electric vehicles.

Indeed, it's not unusual to see renewable energy sources being added to electric vehicle chargers to keep the entire system off the electric grid as much as possible.

That's the thinking behind a new integrated solution called Sanya Skypump from General Electric's industrial division and Urban Green Energy, a renewable energy technology manufacturer based in New York.

The system pairs GE's DuraStation electric vehicle chargers with Urban Green Energy's 4-kilowatt vertical wind turbines. Durastation takes 4-8 hours to charge a battery. The UGE wind turbine rises 42 feet into the sky, requires winds at least 7 miles per hour to generate power. 

The first installation of Sanya Skypump is near Barcelona, Spain, at the headquarters of Cespa, an environmental services company. More installations are planned for the United States and Australia before the end of 2012 at shopping malls, universities and other locations. Details on pricing weren't available, but the companies say the system takes less than two hours to install.

  • Hmmm, 4-8 hours...

    Wouldn't it be faster to just put standard sails on your car and tack up the freeway? It's still wind powered. Perhaps you could put large fans along the freeway pointing the correct way to give a boost on hills for sailcars?

    Then again, you could put a grid over the freeway and put up a pole on each car with a metal strip, similar to the bumper cars you will soon see at the Indy 500!

    I'm actually betting on coal fired steam engines returning, for the few left after the food riots when this all crashes in on us.

  • When the wind isn't blowing, then what?

    INDUSTRIAL WIND TURBINES ARE A SHAM AND DO NOT PROVIDE CLEAN ENERGY! Not one coal or gas plant the world over has been decommissioned because of IWTs...and eliminating our dependence on fossil fuels is their whole purpose. To quote an expert: “Because wind blows intermittently, electric utilities must either keep their conventional power plants running all the time to make sure the lights don’t go dark, or continually ramp up and down the output from conventional coal-or gas-fired generators (called “cycling”). But coal-fired and gas-fired generators are designed to run continuously, and if they don’t, fuel consumption and emissions generally increase.” This is happening worldwide, and in places like Colorado and Texas where CO2 and power plant pollution have increased since installing wind farms:

    The wind industry is built on crony capitalism, it is the only way it can exist. Taxpayer money builds them and power companies are mandated to buy wind generated power at much higher rates than conventionally produced power. There is no true benefit, except to wind power companies, politicians and lobbyists. Get ready to pay a lot more on your electric bills if offshore wind proliferates.

      Seems when it comes to wind, people can attack all they like without presenting any facts.

      Spain gets 17% of its annual power from wind, more than from coal, which used to be number 1 provider. And Spain is an electricity island, with scarce recource to international networks to help balance supply and demand. Just imagine how much more wind power could enter the system with increased interconnection abroad (currently under construction). Wind has replaced coal power, which is now undergoing decommissioning. No new coal plants are going up. The grid operator calculates some 800MW of combined cycle gas power are enough to cover the variability of Spain's 21,000 MW of wind capacity (it is NOT intermittent as your "expert" wrongly states. It varies gradually over extended periods. Demand varies much more dramatically. Intermittency is on/off).

  • What's the goal??

    If the goal is to squeak every ounce of energy out of the environment regardless of the cost, well done! If the goal is to balance environmental stewardship with reasonable cost and feasibility, somebody take their jobs away. Imagine hundreds of these stupid things in a shopping mall parling lot? You'd get dizzy trying to find your car. This article also fails to mention that they must be grid connected to be effective, otherwise you'll never have enough wind to recharge your car in a reasonable amount of time. This reeks of goverment madated waste of taxpayer dollars.
