Yahoo has embarked on a major new datacentre project, the search and web service provider announced on Thursday.

The datacentre, due to be based in Avenches, Switzerland, will see Yahoo redevelop a manufacturing packaging plant into a major European hub for the company.

Yahoo said that it plans to use a "unique Yahoo design" to use free cooling to keep cooling costs down. Yahoo recently unveiled a 'chicken coop' datacentre in New York which used free cooling to cut energy costs.

Yahoo shifted its European headquarters from London to Switzerland in 2008. Alongside the datacentre announcement, Yahoo said it is constructing a new headquarters in Rolle, Switzerland.

"We are thrilled to unveil a world-class, energy-efficient datacentre in Avenches, ... the new datacentre enables Yahoo! to provide popular products and services to our users in Europe and beyond," Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said in a statement.

At the time of writing, information on expected power usage effectiveness (PUE), total power drawdown, server load and other specifics was not available from Yahoo.
