ZDNet UK's App Of The Day kicks off

Summary: From this week, ZDNet UK is recommending an App of the Day. It seems only polite, now we have our own app, to take a deeper look at this lively area of mobile tech — and, of course, we'll do it with the needs of enterprise IT up there at the top of the list.

From this week, ZDNet UK is recommending an App of the Day. It seems only polite, now we have our own app, to take a deeper look at this lively area of mobile tech — and, of course, we'll do it with the needs of enterprise IT up there at the top of the list. If an app can't answer the question "what problem is it solving?", it won't get a look-in.

So, no to Angry Birds or Spotify; yes to VNC clients and Wi-Fi analysis tools (you can satisfy your gaming and entertainment needs through our sister sites Gamespot UK and CNET UK, of course). We use a lot of enterprise-friendly apps ourselves, either in our day to day work, when we've got a particular problem to investigate, or just because we like analysing Wi-Fi networks more than playing Angry Birds.

To get our recommendations, you should sign up to our daily News Update newsletter — or wait for our weekend round-up, when we put all five online.

While we'll be covering all platforms as appropriate, you may notice a slight preponderance towards Android. Whether by coincidence, deep sociological effects or just because an open platform encourages this sort of application, ZDNet UK is almost exclusively an Android outfit. We know and appreciate iOS and keenly watch the evolution of Windows Phone 7, WebOS, BlackBerry and the others, but there just seems to be more interesting stuff going on around the edges of Android.

Disagree? Good: let us know in the comments below. Likewise, if you've got a suggestion for something you've found really useful — even if it's wilfully obscure — in your IT life, we'd love to hear about it. Or suggest an app you'd like to see but can't find. People are watching, people with app developing skills and an itch to code.

One day, your app could be at the top of the charts. For now, join us as we look at the best the mobile world has to offer.

  • Can you review "UK Tax Tool 2011" on the iPhone? It provides HMRC tax tables, calculates net pay from gross salary and the reverse (calculates your target salary from the take home pay you need to cover living costs), calculates employers NI, performs basic VAT calculations, and includes many settings to better reflect your personal circumstances. I wrote it to provide a better user experience and more powerful features than the incumbents. I'd be interested in your views!

  • Hello! We've got a pool of apps we want to look at, and I'll certainly add yours to the list.
