On the heels of another $8 million in venture funding, cloud service provider Zetta.net has pushed out an upgrade to its enterprise-grade backup and disaster recovery solution for small and midsize businesses (SMBs), called DataProtect

The biggest enhancement comes in the area of speed, in the form of advanced WAN traffic optimization. The new service is estimated at 200 percent faster than the previous generation, and roughly 400 percent faster than competitive cloud backup and disaster recovery solutions, according to Zetta.net.

Why does that matter? Because the backup process happens in a matter of minutes versus hours. Ditto the recovery process.

The service also now includes a local backup option, for selected data sets, for those SMBs that would like to keep a data backup locally, as well.

Zetta.net's latest $8 million venture infusion comes from Industry Ventures, Foundation Capital and Sigma. The new money brings the total that the company has received so far up to $39.5 million.

Notes Ashmeet Sidana, general partner of Foundation Capital:

"With millions of files increasing exponentially, growing data sets, and distributed environments, old-school backup technologies like tape, software appliances and consumer-grade clouds are increasingly struggling to keep up with backup requirements and can pose management nightmares. Zetta.net's solution delivers a very effective alternative to traditional, often cumbersome backup systems at an affordable price that makes enterprise-grade backup and disaster recovery accessible to any size company."

This isn't an insignificant investment, though. The service starts at $225 per month for unlimited backup and recovery software access, 500 gigabytes of cloud storage, and 24x7 engineer-level support.
