Millions of students and school staff in the Midlands are set to be connected to the Janet education and research network.

The body that oversees Janet has signed a £4.5m deal with ntl:Telewest Business for a data network that will take Janet services to the West Midlands.

The network, known as the West Midlands Regional Network, will cover eight higher education institutes including Coventry University; 45 further education colleges; and 2,500 primary and secondary schools with more than 3.4 million pupils and education workers between them.

Newly wired-up schools will be able to get connections of between 10Mbps to 1Gbps from the 10Gbps core network.

As a result, the Midlands educational institutions will be better able to collaborate with their peers around the world on science projects as well as being able to take advantage of e-learning tools and videoconferencing.
