In-Stat surveyed 382 enterprise market respondents in July of 2004 regarding their telecom purchasing behavior. Respondents were surveyed regarding providers of voice, data, or managed services. Those being surveyed were given the choice of "currently purchase from," "would seriously consider purchasing from," "would not consider purchasing from," or "don't know" responses.

When asked about key telecom priorities and/or areas of investment over the next twelve months, despite the countless telecom needs of decision-makers in this segment, a few key issues emerged among respondents in the enterprise market:

  1. Security/data protection is still a key issue and something elevant to telecom decision-making,
  2. These businesses are trying to rationalize and centralize the requirements and management of remote offices and employees, and
  3. Firms are beginning to establish key provider relationships.

In this vein, "increasing use of disaster recovery and/or storage back-up services" was the most commonly cited response, cited by 41% of respondents. Of interest, "purchasing both wireless and wireline telecom services from one provider" and "creating remote access standards for telecommuters" were also relatively common responses.
