6 high-profile trials of wireless car charging on deck
The trials will involve both Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf vehicles, and they will take place around the United States. The effort builds on Evatran's existing tests of the Plugless Power technology both at its own corporate location in Wytheville, Va., and at the Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.
Evatran said the trials will involve research across several different usage scenarios, involving rental car agencies, corporate campuses, and utility providers. The company will collect data on a daily basis; that information will be used to guide the ongoing development of aftermarket products that currently are scheduled for release in late 2012.
Said Plugless Power co-founder and CEO Tom Hough:
"We want to show the world that the repetitive plug-in, unplug process doesn't have to be part of electric vehicle ownership; we want to tell the market that a better option is on the way."
The trials are planned for February 2012. The identity of the participants (which wasn't yet disclosed) will be made public early next year. The tests will be extended in the second quarter of 2012.
