AVerMedia today announced the launch of the AVerTVHD Volar Max, a new USB 2.0-based TV tuner that’s PC and Mac compatible.

The AVerTVHD Volar Max is a USB TV tuner stick that enables your computer to receive HD digital television (ATSC) and unencrypted digital cable (ClearQAM) signals, at up to 1080i resolution. In other words, free over the air digital TV programming.

The device includes software to manage tuning, “timeshifting” and Personal Video Recording (PVR) features. It supports closed captions and digital surround sound.

The PC version's software also offers the ability to record video in H.264 format (320 x 240 resolution) and play it back on an Apple iPod.

The device retails for $70.
