Akamai second quarter earnings fell short of expectations, but revenue was on target.

The company reported second quarter earnings of $67 million, or 37 cents a share, on revenue of $541 million, up 12 percent from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings for the second quarter was 57 cents a share, a penny short of Wall Street estimates.

The content delivery network provider said that it is investing in its platform to create more products.

By business unit, Akamai's media delivery services had sales of $244 million in the second quarter, up 12 percent from a year ago. Performance and security saw revenue jump 15 percent from a year ago to $256 million.

Most of Akamai's revenue comes from the U.S. so currency fluctuations had a smaller impact on earnings relative to other tech providers.
