in brief Optus ICT services subsidiary Alphawest today confirmed it had laid off 33 staff following an organisational restructure.

"The aim of this restructure is to create a sustainable and efficient organisation which is more closely aligned to the needs of our customers," an Optus spokeswoman said in a statement.

The spokeswoman said redundancies had occurred where management had identified duplicated roles, or a process had been streamlined. "Senior and middle management as well as sales, operational and support staff have been affected," they said. "Customer delivery staff numbers have been maintained."

No further details were available, however the Optus spokeswoman said finding the right balance between managing costs and providing the best possible service to customers was criticial in the current environment and that the outcome of the review would leave Alphawest well placed in the market.
