Amazon said Monday that its Appstore has more than 240,000 apps and games and almost triple the tally from last year.

The disclosure comes ahead of what is expected to be Amazon's smartphone launch on Wednesday. Amazon is courting developers just after Apple's WWDC conference and before the Google I/O powwow at the end of the month.

Apple's App Store and Google's Play marketplace both have more than 1 million apps. Microsoft has about 400,000 apps between its Windows 8 and Windows Phone marketplace.

Amazon commissioned IDC to do a survey on Kindle Fire development and said 65 percent of developers found monetization the same or better relative to rivals. In addition, 74 percent of those same developers said average revenue per app was better on the Kindle Fire.

The big question will be how Amazon will be able to use that Kindle Fire ecosystem for its smartphone. Ultimately, Amazon will need to tie Kindle Fire apps, its cloud tools, and features like mobile ads, in-app purchasing and analytics into its phone platform.
