AMD jumps on upgrade, Gateway prospects

Good news for Advanced Micro Devices could follow from Gateway's bad news
Written by Tiffany Kary, Contributor

The chip maker got an upgrade from an AMD critic Thursday just as Gateway said it can't get enough Intel chips, and could go back to AMD.

Shares in AMD rose 1 1/2 to 31 1/2 Thursday, and have rallied from $17 to $32 (£11 to £20) over the last few months to approach their 52-week high of 33. The chip maker trimmed its losses in the third quarter and overcame the production problems that have ruined previous quarters.
