AMD slashes prices in Asia
Under the new pricing, the official price for 1.3GHz Athlon dropped 28 percent from US$350 to US$253. The 1GHz Athlon chip fell about 22 percent from US$204 to US$160 (see table below).
When contacted, AMD Far East spokesperson Wee Yep Yin said that the price reduction would take immediate effect.
The latest price cut is the second in a month by the Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker. The previous reductions took place on April 18.
Today's announcement comes as no surprise as analysts were expecting AMD to slash prices following Intel's move to lower Pentium 4 prices.
Yesterday, it was reported that AMD had quietly started reducing prices in the US.
Despite the confusion in AMD's pricing strategy, analysts said the price cuts will serve to help it stay competitive with Intel and boost demand for its (AMD's) chips.
Last month, Intel has reduced prices for its Pentium 4 processor in Asia Pacific by between 11 percent and 19 percent.
