Following a major executive level restructure that occurred in October, Dalton will now report to the bank's group managing director for strategy and marketing, Margaret Payn.

"In his role, Peter's initial focus will be to define and shape the future directions for innovation, and he will use his technical expertise to look at the potential of integrating emerging technologies to deliver better business results across the bank," the ANZ said in a statement.

Dalton still will sit beneath technology chief David Cartwright who shares the same rank with Dalton's new boss, Payn.

ANZ said it expected to make further announcements in the new year and was now on the search for a new CIO.

"Peter has had a long and successful career with ANZ, having joined the bank in 1995, becoming chief information officer in August 2006," the bank said.

Dalton will commence his new role at the end of January.

Group managing director of operations, technology and shared services, David Cartwright, and deputy chief information officer Kieran Griffiths will jointly manage technology until the bank finds a new CIO, the bank said.
