Apple posts surprise profit

Apple has surprised observers who had made gloomy loss forecasts, declaring a $25 million profit for its fourth fiscal quarter on sales of $2.3 billion.

However, another firm that has been stumbling over the last year, Borland, is expected to make another loss. The firm will have a deficit of about $11 million for its second fiscal quarter, prompting it to make 125 staff - about 15 per cent of its workforce - redundant.
