Apple is reportedly going to meet to weigh candidates for the board seat vacated by Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple directors will meet Tuesday to discuss Schmidt's replacement. Schmidt resigned from the board given that Apple and Google increasingly compete.

There are a few moving parts in the selection process since the Federal Trade Commission is watching Apple closely because there is too much overlap with the board of Google.

While a bevy of candidates will be examined---who wouldn't want to be on Apple's board?---the obvious choice would be chief operating officer Tim Cook. Cook is a fine executive and essentially Apple's succession policy. He's the type of exec that should be on Apple's board.

Simply put, naming Cook to Apple's board is a no-brainer.
