AT&T confirmed this week that it is in the early stages of negotiations to buy the IBM Global Network, which was put on the block by Big Blue last month. The Global Network is IBM's physical network upon which it runs its outsourcing and value-add network activities.

AT&T declined to comment in great detail but it is thought IBM wants at least $3bn (£1.83bn) for the unit which is generally seen as an IBM success story.

Any sale would not affect existing services deals that enterprises have with AT&T or IBM, said Rick Roscitt, president and chief executive of AT&T Solutions, Ma Bell's outsourcing wing.
