BBM coming to Windows Phone and Nokia X

The BBM app will be available for Windows Phone and the Android-based Nokia X devices in "the coming months", BlackBerry revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

BBM launched for Android and Apple iOS devices last year , and a BlackBerry executive was recently quoted as saying BlackBerry would launch BBM on Windows Phone when there was "demand in sufficient numbers to make it worth our while". Windows Phone market share rose in the US and Europe last year, according to analyst estimates.

The BBM software suite allows users to instant message each other, personalise their account with pictures, avatars and status updates and share messages between up to 50 people using the BBM Groups feature.

BBM will also provides free voice calls between BBM contacts on Windows Phone, Nokia X, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry anywhere in the world using phone data or WiFi connections.

BBM will be available as a free download from the Windows Phone Store this summer. BBM for Nokia X will be available from the Nokia Store when the Nokia X platform launches.
